Henna Party in Marrakech: Negafa, Dakka and a Night to Remember

Ask anyone who has attended a full Moroccan wedding which night they remember most, and they'll usually say the henna party — the intimate evening before the wedding where the bride wears the traditional green outfit, a henna artist works by candlelight, and the drums start. For international couples it's the single best welcome-night format that exists: deeply local, wildly photogenic, and it turns your guests from spectators into participants. Here's what it involves and what it costs.

What actually happens at a Moroccan henna party

  1. The bride's entrance — often carried in on the amariya throne, in the green henna outfit, escorted by the negafa.
  2. The henna ritual — a nekacha (henna artist) draws intricate designs on the bride's hands and feet; guests follow with smaller motifs if they wish.
  3. Music — houariyate (traditional female singers) or a chaâbi band, building to dakka marrakchia drummers.
  4. Tea, pastries and dinner — from a pastry buffet to a full seated meal, depending on format.

The evening runs 3 to 5 hours. The key figure is the negafa: the traditional mistress of ceremony who dresses the bride (2-3 outfit changes on a henna night), provides jewellery, and choreographs every entrance. Prices below — published, which is rare in this market.

Adding a henna night to a destination wedding

For international couples, the classic build is henna night Friday (close family and friends, 40-80 people), wedding Saturday. Keeping both nights in one venue saves a hire fee and a full decor reset — that's how our Prestige wedding package is built. As a standalone add-on, budget 15-20% of your total wedding spend; see where it fits in the overall wedding budget breakdown.

Guests with no Moroccan background need zero preparation: the negafa and our team guide everyone through the evening, and we brief your MC or celebrant so the rituals are explained as they happen. Outfit rental for guests (caftans, jabadors) can be arranged from 300-600 MAD per person — half your guest list will want the photos.

FAQ

What is a Moroccan henna party?

The traditional pre-wedding evening: the bride, dressed in green by the negafa, receives henna designs from a nekacha while family and friends celebrate with music, tea and pastries. For destination weddings it doubles as the welcome party.

How much does a henna party cost?

From 15,000 MAD (~€1,360) for an intimate 40-guest evening to 55,000 MAD+ (~€5,000+) for a large villa event with full dakka troupe and dinner. The negafa herself runs 5,000-15,000 MAD depending on tier.

What does the negafa do?

Everything around the bride's appearance and entrances: outfit rental (with jewellery), dressing between changes, the amariya throne entrance, and coordination with the musicians. A good negafa is effectively the evening's artistic director.

Can we add a henna night to our wedding package?

Yes — it's included in our Prestige package and available as an add-on to any other (from 15,000 MAD). Same venue both nights is the budget-smart configuration. Start from your Marrakech wedding.
